With two cocker spaniels and a two year old in our family, it was become customary to home bake a cake for everyone - dogs included!
A traditional cake recipe is a no no for pooches because of it's high sugar content. So instead, I baked a peanut butter and banana cake that is man and bestie friendly for Rosie's 3rd birthday.
Here's what you need and how to make it....
Peanut butter and banana dog birthday cake - Ingredients
- 60ml olive oil
- 100g honey
- 120g peanut butter
- 150ml whole milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsps. baking powder
- 2 bananas (mashed)
- 300g whole-wheat or plain flour
Banana frosting - ingredients
- 1 banana (mashed up)
- 3 heaped tbsp real Greek yoghurt
- 2 tsps. vanilla essence
- 2 tbsp plain flour
Method
1. Preheat oven to 180°C / Gas Mark 4.
2. Grease and line two 20cm / 8" inch cake tins.
3. In a large bowl, mix together the eggs, peanut butter, olive oil, milk and honey. I used an electric whisk for about 10 seconds.
4. Add the bananas to your mix and then stir in the sieved flour. Be careful not to overmix. You should have a thick, sticky texture to the mix.
5. Spoon equally into your cake tins and put in the oven for 25 minutes or until cooked. You can test the bake by putting a metal skewer in - if it comes out clean then your bake is done.
6. Whilst it is baking, get started on your frosting by combining all ingredients in a bowl and stirring. The flour will thicken the mixture so apply as much as you need until you get the texture you want. Once combined, put in the fridge.
7. Remove your cakes from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack.
8. Once cooled, add frosting between the two cakes and on top.
9. Optional - Decorate with some of your pups favourite treats. You might not want to do this if you are sharing it!
Serve and watch your doggie wag their tail in delight at their special cake on their special day. Snap a photo to keep and remember forever.
Let me know if you give it a go! I'd love to see your happy dogs with their cakes.
